Urspr\u00fcnglich ein Handelsposten der East India Company und von 1773 bis 1911 Hauptstadt der britischen Herrschaft, ist sie noch heute f\u00fcr ihre prachtvolle Kolonialarchitektur bekannt und ist die \u00e4lteste Hafenstadt Indiens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heute ist Kalkutta de facto die Kulturhauptstadt Indiens und eine historisch und kulturell bedeutende Stadt in der historischen Region Bengalen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Es ist eine der \u00e4rmsten und \u00fcberbev\u00f6lkertsten Regionen Indiens. Kurioserweise ist Kalkutta auch die Heimat vieler Industrieanlagen gro\u00dfer staatlicher und privater Unternehmen. Zu den wichtigsten Industriezweigen z\u00e4hlen Stahl, Schwerindustrie, Bergbau, Mineralien, Zement, Pharmazeutika, Lebensmittelverarbeitung, Landwirtschaft, Elektronik, Textilien und Jute. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hier befindet sich das Mutterhaus, das Hauptquartier der von Mutter Teresa gegr\u00fcndeten Missionarinnen der N\u00e4chstenliebe, deren Grab sich an diesem Ort befindet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drei Viertel der Bev\u00f6lkerung von Kalkutta bezeichnen sich als Hindus, der Islam ist die zweitgr\u00f6\u00dfte Religion.
