Originalmente un puesto comercial de la Compa\u00f1\u00eda de las Indias Orientales y la capital bajo el Raj brit\u00e1nico de 1773 a 1911, todav\u00eda es conocida por su gran arquitectura colonial y es la ciudad portuaria m\u00e1s antigua de la India. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hoy Calcuta es la capital cultural de facto de la India y una ciudad de importancia hist\u00f3rica y cultural en la regi\u00f3n hist\u00f3rica de Bengala. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Es una de las regiones m\u00e1s pobres y superpobladas de la India.
