La population est traditionnellement compos\u00e9e de Kurdes et d\u2019une minorit\u00e9 importante d\u2019Arabes chr\u00e9tiens. Apr\u00e8s de nombreux conflits ethniques, la ville est tomb\u00e9e aux mains de l&#039;\u00c9tat islamique en Irak et au Levant (EIIL) en juin 2014. En 2017, les forces irakiennes et kurdes ont finalement repouss\u00e9 les insurg\u00e9s sunnites. Depuis lors, des efforts ont \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9ploy\u00e9s pour restaurer cette r\u00e9gion d\u00e9chir\u00e9e par la guerre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La tradition dit que le proph\u00e8te Jonas a fond\u00e9 une \u00e9glise dans ce qui est aujourd&#039;hui Mossoul, bien qu&#039;il ne s&#039;agisse que de sp\u00e9culations. Ninive se trouvait sur la rive est du Tigre dans l\u2019ancienne Assyrie, et Mossoul se trouve sur la rive ouest. Nebi Yunis est v\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9e comme la tombe traditionnelle de Jonas, mais elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9truite par l&#039;EIIL en juillet 2014. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aujourd\u2019hui, seules quelques dizaines de familles chr\u00e9tiennes sont retourn\u00e9es \u00e0 Mossoul depuis sa reconqu\u00eate en 2017.
