Pada asalnya sebuah pos perdagangan Syarikat India Timur dan ibu kota di bawah British Raj dari 1773 hingga 1911, ia masih terkenal dengan seni bina kolonialnya yang hebat dan merupakan bandar pelabuhan tertua di India. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hari ini Kolkata ialah ibu kota budaya de facto India dan bandar yang penting dari segi sejarah dan budaya di wilayah bersejarah Bengal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ia adalah salah satu kawasan termiskin dan paling ramai penduduk di India. Anehnya, Kolkata juga merupakan rumah kepada banyak unit perindustrian yang dikendalikan oleh syarikat sektor awam dan swasta yang besar. Sektor utama termasuk keluli, kejuruteraan berat, perlombongan, mineral, simen, farmaseutikal, pemprosesan makanan, pertanian, elektronik, tekstil dan jut. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ia adalah rumah kepada Mother House, ibu pejabat Missionaries of Charity yang diasaskan oleh Mother Teresa, yang makamnya berada di tapak. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tiga perempat daripada penduduk Kolkata mengenal pasti sebagai Hindu, dengan Islam menjadi agama kedua terbesar.
