Ia adalah salah satu bandar terbesar di Sahara dengan 1.5 juta penduduk. Ia juga merupakan salah satu ibu kota terbaharu di Afrika, dinamakan sebagai ibu kota sejurus sebelum kemerdekaan Mauritania daripada Perancis pada tahun 1960. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ibu kota ini mempunyai pelabuhan laut dalam di Atlantik, yang kebanyakannya telah dibangunkan dalam beberapa tahun kebelakangan ini oleh orang Cina.
