Srinagar is de zomerhoofdstad van het vakbondsgebied Jammu en Kasjmir in Noord-India. De stad ligt langs de rivier de Jhelum op een hoogte van 1.500 meter. In tegenstelling tot enige andere stad in India is Srinagar overwegend een moslimgemeenschap, waarbij 95% van de mensen zich identificeert als moslim. Vanwege deze overheersende invloed van de islam kent Srinagar veel beperkingen op kleding, alcohol en sociale evenementen die vaker voorkomen in het Midden-Oosten. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Een interessant facet van het leven in Srinagar is de traditie van woonboten op Dal en Nigeen, de twee meren rond de stad. Deze traditie begon tijdens de Britse overheersing in de jaren 1850 als een manier voor overheidsfunctionarissen om aan de hitte van de vlakten te ontsnappen. De plaatselijke hindoe-maharadja ontzegde hen de mogelijkheid om land te bezitten, dus begonnen de Britten schepen en industri\u00eble boten om te bouwen tot woonboten.
