Oorspronkelijk was het een handelspost van de Oost-Indische Compagnie en de hoofdstad onder de Britse Raj van 1773 tot 1911. Het staat nog steeds bekend om zijn grootse koloniale architectuur en is de oudste havenstad van India. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tegenwoordig is Kolkata de de facto culturele hoofdstad van India en een historisch en cultureel belangrijke stad in de historische regio Bengalen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Het is een van de armste en meest overbevolkte regio&#039;s van India. Vreemd genoeg is Kolkata ook de thuisbasis van veel industri\u00eble eenheden die worden beheerd door grote bedrijven uit de publieke en private sector. Belangrijke sectoren zijn onder meer staal, zware techniek, mijnbouw, mineralen, cement, farmaceutische producten, voedselverwerking, landbouw, elektronica, textiel en jute. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Het is de thuisbasis van Mother House, het hoofdkwartier van de Missionarissen van Liefde, opgericht door Moeder Teresa, wiens graf zich op de plek bevindt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Driekwart van de bevolking van Kolkata identificeert zich als hindoe, waarbij de islam de op een na grootste religie is.
