De bevolking bestond traditioneel uit Koerden en een aanzienlijke minderheid uit christelijke Arabieren. Na veel etnische conflicten viel de stad in juni 2014 in handen van de Islamitische Staat van Irak en Levant (ISIL). In 2017 verdreven Iraakse en Koerdische troepen uiteindelijk de soennitische opstandelingen. Sindsdien zijn er pogingen ondernomen om het door oorlog verscheurde gebied te herstellen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De traditie zegt dat de profeet Jona een kerk stichtte in wat nu Mosul is, hoewel dit slechts speculatie is. Nineve lag aan de oostelijke oever van de rivier de Tigris in het oude Assyri\u00eb, en Mosul ligt aan de westelijke oever. Nebi Yunis wordt vereerd als het traditionele graf van Jona, maar werd in juli 2014 door ISIL verwoest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tegenwoordig zijn slechts enkele tientallen christelijke gezinnen teruggekeerd naar Mosul sinds het in 2017 werd heroverd.
